California Law prohibits firing for off-duty conduct 01-01-00
A recent court of appeals decision allowing a company to fire a manager for going to a strip club after work may no longer be valid as a result of recent legislation signed into law by Governor Davis.
The new law prohibits employers from firing employees for any lawful off-duty conduct. It still would be permissible for employers to fire employees for unlawful off-duty conduct, if it is job related. The law is AB 1689.
Before firing employees for off-duty conduct, check with legal counsel.
