Question & Answer

Are these questions legal to ask in interviews? 02-21-01

In interviewing, can a recruiter or HR rep ask:

  1. Can you provide us with a copy of your last job performance review?
  2. What were the goals you had to reach on that last review, and did you reach them?
  3. Were you fired or asked to leave any of your previous jobs?

Rita Risser responds:

All of these are legal to ask, and in fact they are excellent ways of getting good, job related information from applicants. There may be some company confidential information in the review that the applicant should black out so that you don't see it. And, of course, the applicant may lie about the third question, so it is always advisable to check with their former employers as well.
