Can I get fired over untrue rumors of an affair? 01-14-2004

There is a lady at my job who is telling all the other employees that me and another employee have a relationship going on. I have told her many times that there is not and she is still telling people from my store and the other stores in the company. People keep asking me if it's true and I tell them no. If she is just trying to get me fired can she succeed? Can I get fired over rumors? I am the third person that I know of that she is using to get personal attention. She has already gotten one guy transferred and she is still trying to get him fired. Thank you

Rita Risser replies:

I'm sorry to hear about your situation. I suggest you write a letter to your manager, with a copy to the head of the Human Resources Department. In it you should state that you are being sexually harassed, your privacy is being invaded, and you are being defamed by this person. Yes, it is sexual harassment. Defamation is where a person says something about you that is untrue. Also put in the letter about the other two guys who were harassed by her. Demand that the company tell her to stop immediately. Also give a copy of the letter to the woman, and tell her you will sue her if she continues. If the company refuses to do anything, or worse yet retaliates against you, file a claim with the California Department of Fair Employment and Housing.

Good luck!
