Can employer allow beards but not goatees? 11-10-2004

Can a dress code limit facial hair to full beards and moustaches and specifically prohibit goatees, if management perceives goatees as "unprofessional" appearance?

Rita Risser replies:

Yes, an employer can have this rule, and in fact could have a rule saying no facial hair at all (with exceptions for people who have religious or medical reasons to wear beards.)
