Can we fire employee for using foul language? 08-06-2008

We have a company rule that is against the use of foul language in front of customers. Is it illegal to terminate an employee for using foul language if it violates company policy?

Rita Risser Replies:

Employers are allowed to set standards for employees and as long as the manager informs employees of the standards, and follows any policies for warnings and/or terminations, the manager may legally fire employees for violating those standards. It would be best if the standards are in writing and indicate that it is a terminable offense. If the employer has a policy of firing for one violation, that also should be in writing.

Good luck.
